Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a modality that focuses on realigning and supplying blood flow to deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense areas such as stiff necks, low back pain/tightness, and sore shoulders. Some strokes from the classic Swedish Massage are used in this modality, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and targets a particular discomfort for the client.
When there is chronic muscle tension or re-injury, there are usually adhesions (painful, rigid parts of tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions often block circulation and cause pain, reduced range of motion (ROM), and inflammation. Deep tissue massage breaks down these adhesions by applying slower and deeper pressure to assist in relieving pain, restoration of ROM, and tissue repair. Therapists also use direct deep pressure with friction like movements with the fibers (same direction as grain of muscle), and also cross fiber (horizontal to grain of muscle) to further disengage adhesions allow blood flow and tissue repair to take place.
Deep tissue massage focuses on a specific problems, such as:Chronic pain; Limited motion(ROM); Assistance in recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injuries); Repetitive strains, such as carpal tunnel syndrome; Slouching (Kyphosis) and Sway back (Lordosis); Ostearthritis pain; Fibromyalgia; Muscle tension, spasms, and more.
The August 2005 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs. Deep tissue massage is also top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. People notice improved ROM immediately after a deep tissue massage.
