Myokinesthetic System Myo = muscle, Kinesthetic = movement. Myokinesthetic therapy is a modality that focuses on muscle, soft tissue, and nerves. The goal of the Myokinesthetic System is to recognize and address the cause of the problem.
Through a postural assessment the source that is causing the problem is identified. By stimulating all of the muscles associated with the source issue, the nervous system begins to send the proper signal to the muscles allowing them to respond and function properly – with a full range of motion (ROM) and without tension, adhesions, and pain.
By restoring a full ROM to a muscle this assists proper functionality and in turn maximizing the process and optimizing performance.
The Myokinesthetic System can:
-Alleviate pain
-Restore ROM
-Improve posture
Myofascial release (or MFR) is an alternative therapy that treats skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles and loosening the fascia that surrounds the muscle to help move them back to where they should to be.
Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of tissue that surrounds muscular structures within the human body. Fascia supports and protects these structures. Osteopathic theory believes that this tissue can become restricted and bound due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infection, or inactivity resulting in pain, muscle tension, and decreased blood flow.
Rolfing / Structural Integration aims to unwind the strained patterns in the myofascial system, bringing it back to the natural balance, alignment, length, and gait. This is achieved through deep, slow, fascial and muscular manipulation, coupled with movement to re-educate the body.
